Have you ever wondered if your next mobile connection could come from space? Imagine a world where satellites transmit your data more efficiently than ever. Airbus UpNext might just make this vision a reality with their innovative project, SpaceRAN. Discover how this technology promises to transform the way we connect.
The 3 Key Facts Not to Miss
Airbus, through its subsidiary Airbus UpNext, recently announced the launch of SpaceRAN, a demonstrator aimed at testing 5G technology from orbit. This project, supported by France, seeks to establish standardized global connectivity by 2028. Unlike traditional satellites, SpaceRAN is designed to analyze and optimize signals in orbit, thanks to a reprogrammable Arrow platform.
One of the most fascinating aspects of SpaceRAN is the use of remotely reprogrammable satellites. This technology, unprecedented in the sector, allows satellites to evolve and update even after their launch. By managing 5G connections from space, these devices can replace terrestrial antennas and offer coverage in hard-to-reach areas, such as oceans or deserts.
Airbus has brought together a consortium of prestigious partners to carry out the SpaceRAN project. Among them are the German operator Deutsche Telekom, the French Eutelsat, and nine other technological partners. Together, they plan two test platforms: a ground test bench simulating the orbital environment and a payload on a real LEO (low Earth orbit) satellite.
Beyond 5G, SpaceRAN also prepares the ground for 6G. This demonstrator will serve as a laboratory to define tomorrow’s standards while reducing the current costs of transmission from orbit, still considerable. Through this initiative, France hopes to position itself among the leaders in the field of space connectivity.
Founded in 1970, Airbus is globally recognized as a leader in the aerospace and space industry. With a long tradition of innovation, the company has continually pushed the boundaries of technology, developing advanced solutions for commercial and military aviation. The SpaceRAN project highlights Airbus’s commitment to the future, exploring new ways to connect the world through space.
